Jakob Bouwman has always had a love for light and colour. Sketching and painting were self-taught until adulthood when his skills were enhanced and honed by way of workshops and courses. Jakob has taught high school math, science and art for 15 years. He is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree.
For 27 years he has been the sole proprietor of a successful masonry contracting business. He is quite at home in the out-of-doors and enjoys plein air as well as studio work. His landscapes have a rural theme, connected to both Wellington and Brant Counties. He has been inspired by Tom Thompson, the Group of Seven, Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth.
Jakob is intrigued by the uniqueness of every individual. His grandchildren are often his inspiration for portraits. His media of choice are oil, pastel, and occasionally water-colour. He tries to apply the “less is more” principle in his work, while still capturing the essence of his subjects with simple brush strokes and harmonious colour. His work is a tribute to the Master Artist, and to His honour. He lives with his wife in the village of St. George.
